Newman Club

Join us Tuesday night at 6:15pm (after the 5:30pm mass) in the Student Center for our weekly Newman Club dinner! This week we will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with the dedication of St. Augustine's new statue. We will then gather to enjoy Sheppard's Pie, each other's company, and brownies for desert! We hope to see you there!

The Newman Club has been around almost as long as there has been a Catholic Student Center at the University of Florida. Many generations have come to join in our fellowship every week. Some great people have been involved in this organization over the years. The most famous was former UF President Steven C. O’Connell, who was treasurer during his undergrad years. Not everyone is famous, but every weekly member is a pivotal part of this ongoing tradition.

The history of this group is rich and interesting, but what we do now is just as important. Every Tuesday night after the 5:30 Mass (roughly 6:15) we serve dinner to hungry college students at NO charge. We welcome not just Catholics, or just Christians, but everyone that comes through our doors.

We also make sure to make an impact in our community on a regular basis. In the past, we have served meals at the local homeless shelter, St. Francis House. We also have done seasonal projects like making paper angels for children around Christmas.

We strive to create a welcoming environment where everyone is given a glimpse of home. The home cooked dinner is only a small part of achieving that goal. What really makes the difference is when the club officers and many of our other members go out of their way to say hello to someone new. The dinner conversations that happen every week are truly amazing and a constant reminder of God’s presence in each one of us. Sharing a meal is one of the best ways to become part of a family.
