Relay for Life Team

Do you know someone whose life has been affected by cancer? You can honor them and help other people going through it by joining our Relay for Life team. In 2010, our team raised $1,220 and UF as a whole raised $87,833.18 for the American Cancer Society.

This year, The Catholic Gators and the Catholic Saints are teaming up!
The Relay for Life at the University of Florida is held in the O'Connell Center starts at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 23 and ends at noon on March 24. This year's theme is "Lights, Camera, Cure!" Stay tuned for updates!

The event itself consists of team campsites around a track. Each team must have one person from each team walking on the track. The Relay Committee provides other entertainment throughout the event such as improv comedy and a Miss Relay pageant for our more ambitious male team members. Each campsite has a fundraiser and activities for members who are not walking but trying to stay awake.

The highlight of Relay is the Luminaria Ceremony where members of our own community who are battling, battled, or lost the fight to cancer are honored and remembered. Current survivors in attendance lead everyone in a special lap of the track lit up only by Luminaria bags.

THANK YOU!

Thanks to your support, our combined Catholic Gators and Catholic Saints 2011 Relay for Life team raised more than $2,500 to earn bronze team status! This is the first time we've reached that level.

Our theme was New York City and our cash cab fundraiser was a hit. This year we said a rosary after the Luminaria ceremony to pray for those affected by cancer.

Your Support

If you are unable to join the team, you can support us by donating (see link on right), helping out at fundraisers, visiting us at Relay, or praying for us and those for whom we are honoring.

What is Relay for Life?

Relay for Life is an 18 hour event that is intended to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society that also provides an environment of support for those whose lives have been affected by cancer. Since cancer never sleeps, neither do we; and the money we raise goes towards what the ACS refers to as EARS- Education, Advocacy, Research, and Patient Services.
Education and Advocacy goals refer to ACS projects like smoking quitlines, promotion of cancer screenings, and increasing awareness for risk factors for different cancers and other preventative measures. Patient Services the ACS provides include the Hope Lodge which provides a rent-free place for cancer patients to stay while receiving extended (and generally expensive) treatments at distant hospitals, and clinical trial matching services to help patients and researchers find each other. For more information about the ACS itself or any of its programs, their website is www.cancer.org.
